GREYHOUND ANCESTRY ONLINE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:  Why I can't find the dog I'm looking for?

Couple of things to try:

  • Try entering a partial name. Example: Midnight. You will get you all dogs with Midnight somewhere in their name.

  • When searching for all dogs of a specific kennel, use the base name.  Example: Rudel rather than Rudel's.

  • Always search using the Greyhound's name without titles.

Q:  I keep searching and still can not find my Greyhound.  Now what?

The Greyhound you are looking for might not be in the database.

  • Go to the additions & corrections page and email the missing data.  OR

  • Click here to send an email directly.  OR

  • send the pedigree(s) as a .jpg, .pdf or .html format as an attachment in an email.  OR

  • send the information via postal mail or FAX-- email for details.

The database is offline and my goal is to update it monthly.

Q:  I have many Greyhounds of my breeding to enter.  Is there an easier way than entering them individually?

Yes! Email me with your kennel name I will do search the database, compile the information that I have on your dogs and email the results in a MS Excel database.  You fill in the blanks and email the file back to me - easy!  Or add the Greyhound's you'd like to this MS Excel spreadsheet and email the file back to me.  Click here for the Excel file.

Q:  Can you explain the options available after each dog's name?

  • [Pedigree w/links] is a clickable pedigree making it easy to trace ancestors back several generations.

  • [Pedigree w/o links] is great for those who wish to print or save the pedigree.

  • Clicking on [Trial Pedigree] will allow you to construct a pedigree for a potential litter.

  • [Reverse Pedigree] is a clickable chart tracing the get (and the Get's get of a particular Greyhound).

Q:  What other information can I display?

Besides a four different pedigrees selecttion, you can also display the breeding information [BREEDING INFO] of a selected dog. This information includes:

  • The Parents

  • Full Siblings

  • Half-siblings on the sire's side

  • Half-siblings on the dam's side

  • Each breeding partner

  • Registered offspring results of each breeding

Parent, Offspring, and Sibling information is limited to dogs entered in the database, and where the sire/dam information is known so that relationships can be determined.

Only one breeding will be listed per breeding partner. If there was a repeat breeding, it will be listed as one breeding, but all the offspring entered in the database from both litters will be listed.

Q : How do I submit a photo to be displayed with a pedigree?

Here are some suggestions for submission:

  • Have a scanner?  Email the photo to me at info@greyhound-ancestry.com  I prefer scans at 72 DPI and at least 3 inches tall and saved in the JPEG format.
  • Have a website on which the photo appears?  Send me an email with the URL to your website along with a short note giving me permission to download the pictures from there.
  • No Scanner No Website? You are welcome to 'snail mail' to me.  I will scan the pics and return them promptly.  Send photos to:

There is no fee to display photos on these pages.  If you prefer, copyright information can be printed on each photo.

Q:  What is the date of birth format?

day/month/year

Q:  What is COI?

Coefficients of Inbreeding (or COI) is a numerical value calculated on specific common ancestors in a pedigree for percentages of matched identical genes in the gene pool from that common ancestor.   Breedmate calculates the Wright's Inbreeding Coefficient.

Only those Greyhounds with a complete 10 generation pedigree in a database have their COI displayed.

For more information:

A general rule of thumb for COI percentages is that a COI of 25.0% is equivalent to a brother/sister, father/daughter, mother/son breeding.  A COI of 12.5% is equivalent to a half-brother/half-sister, uncle/niece, aunt/nephew breeding.

If you want the COI calculated for a possible litter, email me with prospective sire and dam's names.  I will email you the results.

Q:   What is the date that appears after some of the AKC registration numbers?

This number indicates the month and year of the AKC stud book issue in which the Greyhound appears.

Q:  Why doesn't the dog I submitted show up right away?

The database is not automatically updated once you submit the form. I have to manually update the database then upload it to the website before you will see the change.

Q:  How often do you update the database?

My goal is to update the database at least once a month.

Q:  How do I add my kennel to the kennel name list?

Email me at info@greyhound-ancestry.com with your name, kennel name, location, website link and other information.

Q:  Which Greyhounds are yours?

I have lived with five Greyhounds since 1995-- Wayhigh Striker, LP's Wingman, BDK's Apollo, Esther Lynn and "Sterling" (registered name unknown).  All are technically former racers though only "Kelly" Lp's Wingman had much of a career.  If you'd like to know more about them visit the hound's pages.  Update:  As of 19 March 2005, a new Greyhound has joined our pack.  He is Greycott Willful.  More information about him soon!

Q:  You don't have AKC Greyhounds.  Why did you put together this database?

Interest I suppose. I don't have a simple answer. I like to research. I love the Greyhound breed. There wasn't a Greyhound Pedigree Database devoted to "show" Greyhounds online. The challenge of doing it.  Mostly the desire to share the information that I'd gathered and to provide a place for others interested in Greyhound pedigrees to contribute.

Q:  Where do the pedigrees come from?

Many sources:  AKC/CKC/KC/NGA Stud Books, books, AKC.org website & Awards magazines, Gazehound, Windhound & Sighthound Review magazines, copies provided from breeders & fanciers.

Most entries have been checked against multiple sources when possible. Keep in mind that there are most likely errors. Information is provided "as is" and no guarantees as to the correctness of the information are made.

Q:  Please explain how coat colors are listed in the database.

Colors are listed with the largest area of color first.  Examples:

  • a black & white particolor dog is listed as white & black.
  • a brindle with white toes, chest, tail tip might be listed as brindle & white.

Every attempt to reference documented color is made.  Often the source of color is the AKC.org website if the dog is an American greyhound.

Q:  What program do you use to maintain the database?
